Words from a dog-eared book swam
to the surface and I suddenly *knew* what
Edmund White's young narrator
meant:
"I felt like a scientist must when he's about to bring off the
experiment of
his career: outwardly calm, inwardly jubilant, already braced
for
disappointment."
I had that ready out, "just kidding". If she
laughed and jokingly pushed her
bum out at me, I could teasingly slap it,
digging my fingers into her sides.
Watch her collapse in tickled torment and
it would say no more about me than any
other silly jest.

what?"
